My oldest is 14 today. It is so clear to me that he is at the end of one of those 7-year cycles of life. With each passing day I am reminded how he is leaving the realm of childhood and entering the world of young adulthood. I look forward to having an adult child whose company I enjoy (though I suppose we have to go through self-centered adolescence first.)

I suppose his birthdays, more than any other event, remind me of the passage of time. In five short years I will have a child graduating high school and going to college. It seems like just moments ago that he was in kindergarten.

Ever since the infamous day that was my son’s sixth birthday, the arrival of this day has served as my reminder to celebrate life — his, mine, the very idea of life. Live it fully.
